Articles of the General Alumni Association of Xiamen University

CHAPTER 1 General information

Article 1 Name

The name of the organization is the General Alumni Association of Xiamen University, hereinafter referred to as the Association.

Article 2 Purpose

The Association inherits and promotes the fine traditions and spirits of Xiamen University, aiming to bring alumni together, facilitate academic communications and communications in other fields and promote the development of teaching, research and capital construction in Xiamen University through the establishment and maintainance of contact among alumni at home and abroad.

Article 3 Nature

The Association is a mass organization which alumni of Xiamen University at home and abroad can voluntarily join in.

Article 4 Site

The Association is located in Huaixian Building at Xiamen University (NO.7, Da’nan Road, Siming District, Xiamen)


CHAPTER 2 Tasks

Article 5 Promoting the fine traditions and spirits of Xiamen University, encouraging alumni to achieve career success to set examples for present students in Xiamen University.

Article 6 Providing channels for overseas alumni to know their motherland better and making contributions to it by organizing social gathering activities.

Article 7 Offering accesses for alumni at home and abroad to help with the development of Xiamen University in terms of teaching, research and academic communication.

Article 8 Enhancing the contact between the Association and the local alumni organizations at home and abroad, collecting and sharing information.

Article 9 Editing and publishing Alumni Newsletter of Xiamen University.

Article 10 Organizing other activities that conform to the purpose of the Association.


CHAPTER 3 Membership

Article 11 Alumni of Xiamen University include any of the following:

(I)Graduates of Xiamen University (all levels included), drop-out students, overseas students and students engaged in further studies or adult education.

(II)Those who once worked or taught in Xiamen University, including part-time teachers, honorary professors, guest professors, visiting scholars and so on.

Article 12 Member enrollment procedure: those alumni of Xiamen University who meet the requirements of the above-mentioned, on the basis of accepting the rules and regulations of the Association, can voluntarily join in it after registering in the Association or the local alumni organizations.

Article 13 Group members are permitted as long as the local alumni organizations at home and abroad, on the basis of accepting the rules and regulations of the Association, get in touch with the Association timely.

Article 14 The rights and obligations of the members are as follows.

The rights of the members include:

(I) Voting and being voted when there is a new committee or leader position.

(II) Taking part in the activities organized by the Association and putting forward opinions and suggestions as well as exercising supervision.

(III) Offering suggestions and criticism in the work of Xiamen University.

(IV) Obtaining journals and materials relevant to the Association.

The obligations of the members include:

(I) Obeying the rules and regulations of the Association and implementing the resolution(s ) of it.

(II) Expressing concerns on the work of the Association and Xiamen University, supporting and participating in the activities organized by the Association.

(III) Helping raising funds for the Association.

(IV) Providing relevant information and materials to the Association and submitting writings to Alumni Newsletter of Xiamen University.


CHAPTER 4 Organizations and committees

Article 15 The Membership Representative Conference is the highest authority whose major responsibilities lie in:

(I) Formulating and amending the articles of the Association.

(II) Electing directors for the board of directors of the Association.

(III) Discussing and deciding major issues of the Association.

Generally, the Membership Representative Conference is held every term of office. In exceptional circumstances, it can be held in advance or be postponed.

Article 16 The board of directors of the Association is the executive body of the Membership Representative Conference. Its primary responsibilities include:

(I) Reporting to the Membership Representative Conference on the work and putting forward proposals.

(II) Discussing and deciding the guidelines, plans and major issues of the Association, negotiating matters concerning the election of the next board of directors.

(III) Implementing the resolutions of the Membership Representative Conference and organizing activities on behalf of the Association.

Generally, the board of directors has a 3-year term of office and can be re-elected. Its meetings are held annually, and an interim meeting can be held by the Standing Council when necessary.

Article 17 The Standing Council consists 15-20 members from the board of directors. In the intervals between meetings of the board of directors, Chairperson would preside over the Standing Council which takes the responsibilities of the board of directors.

Article 18 The Standing Council elects 1 Chairperson, several Vice-chairpersons, 1 Secretary-general and several Deputy Secretary-generals.

Article 19 Under the leadership of Secretary-general, Office of the Association is the routine administrative body which is responsible for:

(I) Dealing with general affairs and daily work of the Association.

(II) Keeping in touch with the local alumni organizations at home and abroad.

(III) Helping with alumni’ s visit to and their lectures in Xiamen University.

(IV) Assisting in organizing annual anniversary of Xiamen University.

(V) Editing and publishing Alumni Newsletter of Xiamen University and other journals or materials.

Article 20 Alumni at home and abroad can establish their local alumni organizations when necessary. And the Association is expected to enhance its communication and cooperation with the alumni organizations and provide guidance and help for them if it is necessary.

Article 21 The Association invites several Honorary Chairpersons and Honorary Advisers.


CHAPTER 5 Funds

Article 22 The funds of the Association mainly comes from:

(I) certain operational funds provided by Xiamen University;

(II) grants or contributions given by alumni at home and abroad and other organizations concerned.

Article 23 The funds are mainly used for:

(I) Organizing academic and social gathering activities;

(II) Editing and publishing Alumni Newsletter of Xiamen University and other journals;

(III) Receiving alumni at home and abroad;

(IV) Routine activities.

Article 24 The funds are entrusted to the Finance Office of Xiamen University and operates according to relevant financial regulations. And the Association would announce revenues and expenditures to the public regularly.


CHAPTER 6 Bylaws

Article 25 The articles of the Association were passed on December 25th, 1994 after more than two thirds of the participants of the Membership Representative Conference voted for those articles and got approval from Ministry of Civil Affairs. Since then, the articles of the Association have been valid.

Article 26 The Membership Representative Conference has the authority to amend the articles and the Standing Council has the authority for the interpretation of the articles of the Association.

Article 27 A majority vote( more than two thirds of the participants) by the Membership Representative Conference is required to decertify the Association.
